Container Mastery: Why Sections are Dead for WordPress in 2026
If you’ve been using Elementor for a few years, “Sections” and “Columns” probably feel like second nature. They were the building blocks of the web for a long time. But as we move through 2026, those blocks are starting to feel more like anchors dragging down your site’s performance.
The world of WordPress has moved on to Flexbox Containers, and if you haven’t made the switch yet, you’re essentially building a modern house on an old, shaky foundation. Here is why I’ve completely retired Sections at pavanwp and why you should too.
1. The “Div” Diet: Slimming Down Your Code
The biggest problem with Sections and Columns is what we call “DOM bloat.” To make a simple 3-column layout the old way, Elementor had to create a Section, then a Column, then a Widget Wrapper, layer upon layer of code that the browser has to read.
-
The Container Advantage: Containers use a much flatter structure. Less code means faster loading times, which makes Google’s Core Web Vitals very happy. It’s the “leanest” way to build.
2. Ultimate Layout Freedom
With Sections, you were always stuck in a grid. If you wanted to do something creative or “off-grid,” you usually had to resort to messy negative margins or custom CSS.
-
The Flexbox Magic: Containers allow you to align, stack, and distribute elements with a single click. Want to change a vertical stack to a horizontal row only on mobile? Containers do that natively without needing to duplicate content.
3. Mobile-First is Easier Than Ever
In 2026, most of your traffic is coming from phones. Containers allow you to change the “order” of elements on mobile without changing the desktop layout. This is a game-changer for user experience, ensuring that the most important information (like your CTA) always hits the user’s eye first on a small screen.
4. Future-Proofing Your Website
Elementor has made it clear: Containers are the future. Eventually, the old Section system will be deprecated. By mastering Containers now, you aren’t just making your site faster today; you’re ensuring it doesn’t break when the next big WordPress update rolls out.
